Think about your today's outfit and wonder.. What does it say about you? Often times, not to say that this is right, people form a first impression based on your appearance.
Assumptions are made about your style, your age, your personality, or even the type of vibe you want to put out.
It goes without saying that there are different outfits for different occasions. To put this in an example, you can not wear a bathing suit to go to a job interview or formal suit and dress to visit the park.
And here is where we can easily say that this is happening also online! We have the same exact unwritten ‘rule’ when we choose the fonts we want to use for our website. Just like the clothes your wear, fonts provide people with a first impression about who you are and what you’re about to say, when they first enter your website.
Serif VS Sans Serif
“A serif is a decorative stroke that finishes off the end of a letters stem (sometimes also called the “feet” of the letters).”
As you very well guessed, a serif font is a font that has serifs or feet, while a sans serif is a font that does not, hence the french word “sans.”
Generally, serif font is more ornamental and has serifs extending from the ends. Sans serif font on the other hand, has clean and very precise ends.
As one of the first things prospects see when they find your company’s website online, set ting the tone for your entire brand, you need to be strategic and considerate which font you choose.
Why is choosing the right font so important?
Going back to the example of the outfit before; it’s about choosing an “outfit” that fits your brand. Some fonts are used more casually and are made to be more expressive, while other ones are more buttoned up and reserved. Choosing the wrong font can totally change the personality of your company and brand thus giving people the wrong impression.
Make sure to take your time when picking your font as to accurately portray your brand mission.
